Modern Quilts: Improvising Using Stacks of Solids

12 December 2012 Filed Under: Modern Quilts, Profile, Published Projects, Technique: Design - Creating with Solids 22 Comments

Today, 12/12/12, is an exciting day for me as my instructional DVD Improvising Using Stacks of Solids goes on sale with the special issue of Modern Quilts by Quilters Companion.
Modern Quilts: Improvising Using Stacks of Solids
My project, Revolutions is a modern spin on a traditional block. On the DVD, I take you through the process of colour and fabric selection; freeform cutting without a ruler; curved piecing without pins; and assembling and quilting your quilt. I haven’t see the magazine or DVD myself yet (gulp) but here’s a photo from filming in August:
On set with Modern Quilt
Modern Quilts CoverIn addition to my profile, project and DVD, Modern Quilts includes projects with profiles from:

  • Jennifer Carlton Bailly (USA)
  • Jenny Pedigo (USA)
  • Siobhan Rodgers (Australia)
  • Cynthia Muir (USA)
  • Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr (USA)

and further projects from Australian designers: Claire Turpin, Cathy Underhil, Deborah Louie and Charlotte Dumensy. There’s also a feature on Denyse Schmidt.

To purchase the magazine and DVD, look in local newsagents or contact Universal www.universalshop.com.au (Tel: 1300 303 414).

I will have some stock, for in-person sales only, in the New Year.

DVD & We Love Colour! Giveaway

For Revolutions, I used Kona Cotton solids by Robert Kaufman that come in more than 200 colours:

To be Modern, currently relevant and in keeping with the Pantone predictions for Emerald this past week – I’d have to start with Candy Green….

I would use Mulberry, Sour Apple, Azalea and Black or maybe White – would have to see how B/W went with the other colours – which one makes them pop.

I don’t know the names of all of the colors I would use… but would be the “olive-y” acid greens, rusty purples and cheddar yellow oranges. Thanks! Great giveaway bundle.

I think I would use the calming colours of lavender with a touch of white and ash and a zinger peapod for the Revolutions quilt.

I never cease to be amazed and inspired by the way people see colours in a different way to myself and how they put things together. In reverse I have put colours together that others just cannot see how it flows or interacts BUT then they tell me how much they like the quilt! Thank goodness we are all different!

There are so many beautiful colors in the solids! So had to choose but I really like purples so I’d have to say I would love to use Berry, Plum and Petal in a quilt. They would be so pretty! And throw in some black or white – Yum!

I would use several blues, turquoises, purples, greens, and snow — using various shades of each color would add more interest and dimension.

Join me for my new TEXTplosion! workshop at the Modern Quilt Show Australia from 9.45am-12.45pm on Saturday 14 March 2026 in Petersham Sydney. Book online on the MQSA wesbite via @modernquiltshowau

✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂✂

This 3-hour workshop explores harnessing the power of paper collage to design one-of-a-kind abstract quilts. This workshop explores: fragmenting text; tools to isolate and highlight areas of interest; playing with enlargement, exaggeration and distortion; converting 2-tone designs into colour; converting paper collage designs into fabric compositions; and digital palette generation tools.

When I was invited to teach a four-day workshop at the Australasian Quilt Convention (9-12 April 2026), I jumped a the opportunity to share a deep dive into one of my favourite subjects - abstract design. In “Riffing with Repetition”, we will be exploring how repetition contributes to unity and rhythm and makes our work sing. Whether you are liking to loosen up, think differently or stretch you creative muscles, this workshop will spark new ideas and help you find your rhythm using your preferred techniques and materials.

Bookings are now online at www.AQC.com.au
