In draft ! and other publishing opportunities

July 17, 2010 | Filed Under Published Projects | No Comments

My journey home from Quilt Encouter in South Australia passed very quickly. While I was at the airport, I was able to download a PDF of the draft Twelve by Twelve book which has been circulated to the group for review and final edits. And so I sat on the plane, transfixed as I scrolled through the 176 page document, a huge smile on my face.

Earlier in the year, we all submitted our content to our editor at Lark Crafts - Valerie Shrader. We understood that our material could be modified along the way but in fact there have been very few, if any, changes. Valerie has applied a featherlight editorial touch and worked with the design team to present our quilts, images and stories in an attractive and compelling fashion. We are all thrilled with the result and look forward to sharing it with you in spring (March) 2011.

Meanwhile, if you are interested in publishing your textile art work, then check out these two opportunities:

  • Art Quilt Portfolio: The Natural World - Lark Crafts has announced that Martha Sielman will be authoring a new series of art quilt books. A new title will be published each year, starting in 2012. The first volume will focus on nature – animals, insects, fish, birds, microbes, flowers, trees, water, desert, icebergs – whatever inspires you about the natural world. Each volume in this new Art Quilt Portfolio series will include a Feature section, focusing on 15 to 20 artists in depth; this section will include an interview with each artist, several images of works by the featured artist, and a glimpse into each artist’s studio. The books will also include a Gallery of works by 70 to 80 selected artists, with one full-page image per artist. Lark Crafts is inviting all quilt artists to submit up to three entries for consideration. The call for consideration deadline is 15 August 2010. The entry form will be posted on the Lark Crafts website soon.
  • Fibre Design Book - The Australian Forum for Textile Artists and Dragon Design are seeking images from artists/designers across Australia and New Zealand for publication in late 2010 of a juried collection showcasing fibre/textile objects created since 2000. All entries will be screened by Dragon Design, in the first instance, for technical quality of images and adherence to the competition rules, and payment of entry fees (if applicable). Images will then be transferred to DVD and sent to a panel of qualified judges (to be confirmed) for final selection. Entries close on 1 September 2010 - see the TAFTA website for more details.

Thinking Pink

roseusAlong with some other quilt and textile artists, I have been invited by Deborah Segaert from Down Under Quilts to contribute to the Bid-4A-Cause Auction, a fundraising event for breast cancer research and awareness in October.

The theme is “Goddess Roseus” so I’ve pulled out some pink fabrics to get me warmed up.

It’s always a thrill to see student work. Jeanne Treleaven of South Australia started this quilt in my Power Stripping workshop at the Australasian Quilt Convention earlier in the year. Thank you for sharing your dotty, spotty extravaganza Jeanne!

Kaffe Tapestry in Quilters Companion #38

Today’s mail brought me a copy of Issue 38 of Quilters Companion magazine which features my project Kaffe Tapestry:

Kaffe Tapestry is a popular design in the series of quilts I’ve developed for my Power Stripping workshop - designs that grow quickly with minimum fuss and maximum fabric economy using strips cut across the width of the fabric. Perfect for jelly rolls! This quilt is 90×90inches but can easily be made smaller by eliminating some rows and columns. I had great fun quilting the whimsical scroll vines following a technique outlined by Patsy Thomspon on her DVD Free Motion Fun with Vines & Leaves Volume 2.

Out of the box - my DVD on Quilt Finishing Techniques

May 25, 2009 | Filed Under Published Projects, Technique:Finishing | 9 Comments

It’s been workout day on the Copacabana “stairmaster”. First I trudged up the hill carrying four quilts posted to me for the Sydney Quilt Show. The Laundry King followed behind with a small but surprisingly heavy box. Look what was inside:
Four Fantastic Quilt Finishing Techniques DVD
Yes, I have received my copies of Quilters’ Companion Issue #37 which contains a five page article outlining four different quilt finishing techniques and is accompanied by an instructional DVD featuring yours truly. I’ve had a quick glimpse at the DVD (those are my nerves you can hear rattling) and am thrilled with the way that it turned out. Phew!

In 24 hours or so, I should be sitting on a plane winging my way to Europe via the United States. I hope to have regular internet access while I am travelling but have enabled comment moderation just in case there are any glitches. A bientot.

Eco Colour by India FlintAfter putting in my order with a local book store weeks ago, at last I have my hands on my copy of Eco Colour - botanical dyes for beautiful textilesby India Flint.

What a breath-taking publication! The images are beautiful. It makes me want to rush out and collect some leaves and try some natural dyeing straight away.

Meanwhile over at Dragon Fly Crafts, Fiona has posted some images of her version of my Autumn Leaf Flurry design that features in the May issue of Homespun.
