With just two weeks to go until the delivery date for Regeneration: Contemporary Quilt Textiles 2012, I relieved to say that I have completed the pieced work (apart from a label) and two of the three pieces in the shibori triptych are ready for facing. As the the triptych pieces are rectangular, I am using the finishing technique from my Mitred Facing Tutorial. As you can see, this technique eliminates bulk in the corners and results in a tidy flat finish:
Now I need to go back and fill in the quilting around the edges. I leave this until after I have squared up the quilt and applied the facing, otherwise there is the possibility of rotary cutting through my quilting stitches and having the quilting unravel.
If exploring and improving finishing techniques is one of your goals for 2012, see my Free & Non-Binding: Alternative Quilt Finishes page for a listing of other online tutorials for alternative quilt finishes and my tutorial for Continuous Binding Without Bulges. I also offer a workshop on quilt finishing techiniques – It’s Bound to Please! and am giving a workshop with the Quilters Guild of NSW Inc on 1 August 2012.
