Blogging experts often refer to the concept of the “long tail“. For example, ProBlogger remarks:
That killer super-dugg post is great . . . for a day or two. Granted, the super-dugg post is sometimes great for added readers, linkbacks and helping your blog grow. It’s the long tail, however, that keeps your blog alive and thriving. While that traffic spike is great, if you adhere to publishing solid content as ProBlogger encourages, then your old, quality content overshadows even that super-dugg masterpiece.
And sometimes that tail starts wagging furiously when you least expect it. Over the past 24 hours, I have had a flood of traffic to my very first blog post which features a photo of Taranaki Solstice, my version of a Jean Wells design. While this is really an example of a spike rather than a tail, I am curious to know what provoked this sudden interest.
Some of my most popular posts over time are listed in the “Useful Resource Links” section of my sidebar including my listing of tutorials for Alternative Quilt Finishes and my free pattern for Pacific Placemats. What is the most popular post on your blog that people come back to again and again?

It’s my free purse pattern that gets the most attention on my blog. It doesn’t seem to be growing a tail though because, I’m guessing, readers come for a crafty blog with lots of tutorials but find more of a creative journey journal with a minimum of how-to.

I’ve only been blogging for 6 months or so, but the post I wrote detailing how my hubby & I made a sewing machine table to hold 2 machines back in the 1st month of my blog far & away gets the most hits. Part of it is because it was mentioned on Sew Mama Sew, but it also seems to get fresh hits every day from someone looking to make a sewing machine table too! I’m in the midst of a spike as we speak from a mention on Whip-up about an office chair recover tute I wrote, and a comment on a “This Young House” blog too. Because it also is a “how to” I’ll bet it also has a bit of a tail!
It is fun to look at the stats, though, isn’t it? I know that I’ve become a much better commenter since starting my own blog – what do all these people who click on my blog think? I now understand why folks have giveaway – to elicit feedback. SO I think about doing one too, but then worry – what if nobody writes in then?
Hah! Not too worry, I love the connections I make!

I’m really not sure what I just read from ProBlogger. “It’s like he’s trying to speak to me, I know it!” (Finding Nemo – great movie)
Anyway, I suppose if I want people to visit my blog I should learn this new language and incorporate it’s principles into my life. I don’t even know how to check traffic to my blog. Hmmmm. . .I will have to figure that out. Thanks for opening my wee little mind a bit more.
