I am six months into my creative challenge for 2018 Taking Shape: Cues from Nature – a monthly art project. I am planning to do a cycle of 12 months so this is hump month! It seems only fitting that my artwork depict a humpback whale.
It’s winter here in Copacabana and I vary the route of my morning walk to take in the whale viewing platform at Captain Cook Lookout on the Tudibaring headland. This is the view south towards Sydney:
Whenever the whales appear, there is a collective gasp at their majesty and playfulness:
I decided to focus on the shape of the whale tail.
It was technically challenging to compose the fluke, the two lobes of the whale tail, in one piece and to piece it into the background with the indented curve. Applique would have been much easier!
Echo stitching resulted in a secondary, alien motify – green martian anyone?
And here is the completed textile painting for 15 July 2018 – Waving not Drowning (50x50cm):

I enjoyed your photos and the resulting art quilt that you created! Oh, for my view to be that lovely and enable an outdoor walk in the winter. Just stunning!
Thank you for the peek into the FB MAP project. What inspiration!
