Weekly Art Project: Week 46

9 August 2017 Filed Under: My Surroundings, Weekly Art Project

4 September Update:

Here is my textile sketch for Week 46 – Brush Turkey

Weekly Art Project - Week 46 - Brush Turkey Weekly Art Project - Week 46 - Brush Turkey

This is a placeholder for Week 46 of my weekly art project. I am currently travelling and will catch up with my textile sketches when I get back home. In the meantime, here’s a glimpse of another weekly art project that I serendipitously came across today.

Jilly Edwards is a UK artist whose work is included in Tapestry: Here & Now, an international exhibition of contemporary tapestry currently on display at The Holborne Museum in Bath, England until 1 October. On the left is her work Within the walls (2016) 160 x 160 cms. On the right is Diary of 52 – Using every last thread of time. As the day suggests, each of the 52, 8x8cm abstract works is made from left over threads from that week’s weaving.

The texture in each piece is fabulous – here’s a link to the Jilly Edwards profile on the Craft Council’s website where you can see this installation in more detail. I also found this interview with Jilly Edwards where she discusses her creative practice:

[Tapestry weaving is] a tactile way of working, I feel I’m painting with yarns, you can layer the colours giving a transparent appearance, yet creating dense areas in other places. I love every element of my work, from the initial idea stage, drawing, sampling, making a cartoon to the actual weaving stage, even the finishing off and mounting, its all part of the whole process…[My work is] abstracted in its content, but the content is about reality, my reality, what I see/hear/sense/feel/ read and listen to. Full of colour and subtle changes in textures…It’s important that the medium brings something to the creation, not just weaving for the sake of it.

I look forward to seeing YOUR weekly art project. New participants are welcome to join in at any time.   It would be wonderful to see your work. Be sure to link back to your specific blog/social media post so that we can learn more about your inspiration and process.
