Look out for Quilters Companion Issue 78 (March/April 2016)that, amongst other good things, includes a five page profile article In the Studio with Brenda Gael Smith. The article is thoughtfully written by Erica Spinks and features lots of great photos of me and my creative space. I am indebted to editor Clare Mooney for inviting me to participate in the In the Studio series. The prospect of a professional photo shoot was an occasion for a long overdue declutter and “deep clean” to eradicate some of the gumph that has accumulated since a previous photo shoot for the Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt Challenge book back in, gulp, 2010.
I don’t have a true “before” photo but here is a cleaning-in-progress shot:Several months on and, remarkably, it still pretty much looks like this. (Then again, between travelling overseas and my curatorial and volunteer projects, I haven’t done much sewing since the photo shoot.)
I am especially pleased with the new IKEA Kallax shelving units that I installed along the wall underneath the window. The excursion to IKEA was traumatic (I don’t get out much!) and finding a flatpack to fit into my small hatchback was challenging but the results are great. Serendipitously, the shelves are the same height as my sewing machine table. Check out the article for a full view and other great photos.
