Creative Journeys: Book 1
Modern technology offers textile artists many ways to share their passion and knowledge -blogs; videos; digital slideshows; online workshops;podcasts; e-zines and more.
Lisa Walton of Dyed & Gone to Heaven has embraced technology and published a new e-book available through Amazon – Creative Journeys Book 1: Fun & Easy Surface Design Techniques.
This 160+ page-equivalent publication is a broad survey of surface design techniques to transform fabric including: fabric painting, stamping, decorative rubbings, metallic foils, simple screen printing, stencilling, creative stitchwork and textural quilting. A bargain at US$8.95!
A Useful Resource & Companion
If you’ve never purchased an e-book before, don’t be deterred. You can read Lisa’s book on your computer, tablet or smartphone via the free Kindle Reading app. I loaded my copy onto my iPad and pulled out out a selection of fabric paints to play with using sequin waste as a stencil:
My plan is to cut star shapes out of my new fabric and stitch the shapes onto blank greeting cards for the festive season. Whereas my sample is (ahem) incomplete, Lisa’s book is overflowing with inspiring images and practical insights into an array of products based on many years of experimentation and exploration. And you’re not restricted to working with cotton fabrics either. Lisa has a whole chapter on taming combining different fabrics – velvety, silks, satins, hand- made felt and textured materials – into projects. These techniques are illustrated in her award winning quilts including Squared Up and Crystallisation (the latter is also a popular workshop).
Creative Journeys: Book 1 adopts the same conversational tone as Lisa’s instructive videos and puts all those tips and tricks in one handy place for you to refer to when you next break out your surface design supplies.
