Today’s post is dedicated to my host father Don Hughes who died this week. The love and warmth offered by Don and June was instrumental in my transition to life as an exchange student in a new country. We had such fun and adventures together including being in the band for the musical comedy Kiss Me Kate, hiking and canoeing in the mountains, and a memorable trip to Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.
I last saw Don and June in 2006 after attending the workshop with Nancy Crow. I treasure our time together and have many happy memories. While I was an “only child” when I was living with Don and June, Don had no hesitation in coming out to play with me – indulging my wish to make a snowman in new snow (a novelty to me) and spending time flying kites in the park, lying flat on our backs and looking up to the sky. There’s no snow at Copacabana but today I flew my American eagle kite in honour of my Dad, Don:

So sorry to hear of your loss. Treasure those memories. They don’t make the hurt go away but they do make the hurt hurt a bit less.
