For all the social networking potential that blogging represents, the medium is as susceptible to cliques ([mouse] clickiness?) as any other community. So, when the magazine in today’s Sunday Herald contained an article by Stephanie Wood all about craft and food blogs written by women, I was not surprised when I was not familiar with any of the featured blogs including:
- Six and a Half Stitches
- Poppalina, who has posted the article here
- One Girl Design Works
I maintain a minimalist, quilting-oriented blogroll on my sidebar. While my personal blogroll that refer to every day is more extensive and free-ranging, I guess it’s only natural that I tend to visit comfy blogging friends rather than take the time to seek our new blogging buddies. How about you?
Incidentally, the article refers to an Australian Blogging Survey conducted by ninemsn.com last October. Apparently 18% of women in Australia between 18 and 39 have a blog! I can’t say that this reflects my observations – most of my friends still look at me quizzically when I mention the “b” word. I haven’t been able to find details of this survey but perhaps the results are distorted by people like me that maintain multiple blogs?

Hi! Brenda,
Found this topic just to my taste, I follow textile blog trails all over cyberspace, picked up one or two of interest from your links.
I know what you mean about funny looks when you mention blogs. I’m 67 and my three adult daughters, and two adult grand daughters are the ones that give me funny looks besides my friends.
I really love finding new blogs, but definately got the idea not many women I know follow the same path regardless of age.
Thanks for this one!
Judy.

Hi Brenda, just read a copy of the article on Poppalina’s site, Shula is on my blogroll and I’ve come across the others before but must admit feeling a little ‘grandmotherly’ to most of the blogs I read as most seem to be written by ’30 somethings’.
I’ve just turned 60 and when I’m out with my (mid 30’s) children, if I take out the camera, they say ‘watch out she’s going to blog this’
BTW thanks for including me in your minimalist blog roll (grin)

Alison Brookbanks is one of the bloggers included in a book called The Crafter’s Companion: tips, tales and patterns from a community of creative minds. To read more about the book, see my post http://creativedabbling.blogspot.com/2007/02/community-of-crafters.html
One of the things I like most about blogs is that, providing you have access to the technology, people of any age can take part. WE all learn from each other, regardless of age.

Yes, I get a similar response….they roll their eyes back and say, “Oh I wish I was that clever.” They then treat one as if you are a complete computer geek and ask all sorts of questions about why their own computer is misbehaving!
