The Sultan’s Rings quilt now features as a project in Volume 25 (May 2007) of Quilters Companion magazine:
When you agree to a magazine project commission, you have to be ready to share in a particular kind of way and accept the reality that your quilt may end up with “cousins” all across the country if not the world. In this case, the Sultan’s Rings is already incorporated as an applique option in my Serendipity Circles workshop. I’ve been thrilled with what my students have come up with including this variation by Alison who is relatively new to quilting:
Caitlin O'Connor says
Wooo hoo! Can’t wait to get my copy – I’ve been annoying the newsagents again (is it here yet? How ’bout now?) -I never seem to have enough money at once to subscribe, D’oh!
I love both your version and Alison’s. I reckon that’s great about this sort of design is that people WILL make it their own – yes, there will be cousins, but at least there won’t be rows of identical septuplets (Or more!) like you see with some designs and especially Block of the Month quilts!
WELL DONE, you clever thang you – I know there’s an awful lot of work goes into doing a quilt for a magazine, over and above what you have to do for a workshop/pattern.

I really enjoyed making the quilt. I’m now actually trying to do what Caitlin says – make the idea my own. I’m starting a small quilt based on the circles, but with a different background and other variations. It’s the first time I’ve made quilts that haven’t been for a specific purpose, and it’s a great lesson in creativity, and also lots of fun! I’m really enjoying your approach to quilt making, and all the added extras, links, etc.
