Browsing the shelves in a Sydney bookstore on Thursday, I couldn’t resist coming home with this book by Ineke Berlyn:
As you will know from my contemporary quilt gallery, I prefer piecing to applique techniques and do not go in for much surface design and embellishment. Yet the quilts featured in this book appeal to me very much. Ineke’s use of colour is striking and I can see how an abundance of hand stitching and embroidery has really enhanced the quilts. I’ll have to try it soon!
Meanwhile Tulipa Exotica, one of my few landscape/pictorial quilts, has returned from its travels around Australia as part of the suitcase exhibition of The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc and the 2004 theme challenge Exotica:
The 2006 theme challenge was Going to Pieces and these quilts will be on display at the Sydney Quilt Show at Darling Harbour in June 2007.

Ineke Berlyn has such wonderful color sense. Her quilts are beautiful.
Your tulip Exotica is a surprise! It even looks to be a bit dimensional as well. I dont make the abstract and linear quilts like yours but I so admire them. Looking through your gallery of quilts is a real pleasure.
Brenda says
Yes Karen, the larger tulip on the right hand side is made from padded satin petals giving a 3D effect.

Many of Berlyn’s landscape quilts look inspired by the paintings of Ton Schulten (http://tonschulten.artica.nl/) who’s aesthetic I think you would like too. His paintings practically beg to be made into quilts!

Oh, I was going to say the same thing the Kristin said. I am so enthralled with Ton Schulten’s work. I must get this book. I am heading over to Amazon!
