Here is another Christmas gift from Mum:
This gem iron is similar to the gem irons that Mum has at home – only mine lacks the patina of age and years of making ginger gems. In response to Helen‘s query, ginger gems are very light, ginger-flavoured puffs of sponge. Yummo!
In my last post, I referred to Australian gem scones which I have never actually tried but this recipe provided on the ABC website can probably be relied upon for traditional authenticity. As for popovers, I found this spiel on Wikipedia while the Epicurious Food Dictionary gives the following description:
“A puffy, muffin-size bread with a crisp brown crust and a somewhat hollow, moist interior. Basic popovers begin with a simple batter of eggs, milk, butter and flour. The high proportion of liquid in the batter creates steam that leavens the bread. Popovers may be baked in muffin tins or special popover pans which have extra-deep cups. The name is said to come from the fact that as the batter bakes and expands, it “pops over” the sides of the cup-shaped indentations. Popovers can be plain or variously flavored with items such as cheese, spices or herbs.”
But enough about food, today I will be back in my studio doing quilting again.

Mmmmmmm, ginger, my favourite flavour. I did not get to make my Evil Ginger Chocolate Slice for Xmas and was thinking of bringing it along to a meeting.
Looks like committee meetings are going to be good for the soul and bad for the bottom!
