Be careful what you wish for. Here was I craving a return to piecing and then I remembered that I had promised to make a 12″ Kayaks block for a friendship/farewell quilt:
As you can see, this block requires precision piecing and it’s been a while since I have required sharp points. In the end, I decided to go the foundation piecing route so that I can withstand scrutiny from the quilt police.

I really love this block, Brenda. The piecing looks great, too…I think I’d have gone for paper piecing, too, with those sharp little points. Love the colors.5:57 PM

Gotta love foundation piecing for those points! Do you piece on paper and remove it, or onto something that stays in the quilt? I tried using paper years back, but hated the way it distorted the stitches when I removed it… now I draw or print foundations onto lightweight stitch-in (not fusible) interfacing, and that seems to work better – and doesn’t change the hand of the fabric or add bulk.

I pieced onto paper and removed it – a clean and easy process since I had pre-perforated the sewing lines. I could not be bothered with such rigmarole for an entire quilt but it was fine for four blocks. I can’t wait to see the quilt top put together – an illusion of circles emerges.
