I am often asked how I got into website design, given that my professional background is in law. I blame quilting. When I first started quilting back in 2000, I wanted to share my creative endeavours with family and friends overseas. In a pre-blogging age, a personal website seemed the most efficient way to do this. With a little brotherly assistance from Rowan, I set up a basic website and proceeded to load up photos and stories of my quilts. Thus my web skills development has closely tracked my quilting odyssey.
These days, my blog is an integral part of my website. I enjoy the ritual and discipline of writing regular posts. As highlighted in this excellent article by Lorelle Van Fossen:
The web is about words. No matter how visual and audible it becomes, it continues to be about the words. Blogging is about writing. Many claim that content is king. If content is king, then the army that protects and defends the king is the written word.
Reading through Lorelle’s list of 30 things “to think about next time to put your army to work on your blog”, I realise that the same literary, communication and analytical aptitudes that propelled my legal career come into play in website design and blogging. Against this background, it’s not so improbable that blogging features so prominently in my post-lawyering life. Thanks to Sharon of Mindtracks for sharing the link to Lorelle’s article and tips for better blogging.
