Creative Backstory: Celebrating 20 Years – Year 2012

24 June 2020 Filed Under: 2012 Guest Artist, Contemporary Quilts, Creative Backstory, Curator Knowledge, Exhibition: Beneath the Southern Sky, Exhibitions, Twelve by Twelve Leave a Comment

To mark the 20th anniversary of my first baby quilt, I  have been reflecting on what I have learned along the way. Creative Backstory is a series of blog posts each highlighting a different year. I invite you to share your creative backstory. Each day, I will post an optional prompt. Leave your response as a comment below or on my Serendipity Facebook page or use the tag #creativebackstory or Instagram and I will add your name to my Creative Backstory Giveaway. I look forward to reading about what has shaped your creative life.

With the impulse to create comes the desire to share and 2012 presented two new opportunities for sharing:

  • I was Guest Artist at Craft and Sewing Shows throughout Australia sharing a selection of quilts and demonstrating a range of dyeing and surface design techniques; and
  • I independently curated my first touring exhibition – Beneath the Southern Sky and started compiling a collection ofCurator Knowledge Resources.

I learned so much from both roles. How to talk about the creative process and artwork in a clear and straightforward way. How to listen. People are curious and it’s great to be able to have a good conversation.

Sharing Stories: Prompt #8 & Giveaway

I invite you to share your creative backstory. Here is an optional prompt: what new skill would you like to develop?

Leave your response as a comment below or use the tag #creativebackstory on Facebook or Instagram. I look forward to reading about what has shaped your creative life and will put your name into my celebratory giveaway. At the end of June, after I have completed Creative Backstory posts, I will select one commenter and, pandemic postal system permitting, this King Parrot textile sketch will wing its way to a new home.

My first full day in Marrakech was completed by a 3 hour food tour. A multi-sensory experience meandering through the medina. And, yes, I did get a teensy bit lost making my way back to the riad afterwards… @moroccanfoodadventures

My short time in Marrakech began with pouring rain and ended with a glorious sunset from a rooftop bar overlooking Koutoubia mosque against a backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. 🌴🌅
