Entries for the Wonder of Eyes:Eyes of Wonder textile exhibition, (optional) art exchange and fundraiser for The Fred Hollows Foundation close on 20 February 2020 but I am already receiving textile works in the mail. It’s so exciting to see them coming in!
These works are 20x20cm (8x8in). For exhibition, they do not require a hanging sleeve but I do ask for a velcro strip in a casing to be attached to the back. The velcro enables the work to be affixed to carpet walls. The protective casing means the works can be packed together and the velcro will not stick to other works. Here’s how it looks. Detailed instructions are set out below.
The same approach can be applied to larger works. (By the way, entries for Vision 2020 do NOT require a velcro hanging strip but must include a label and a hanging sleeve with 1 inch clearance at the top and sides when a hanging rod is inserted and is weight-bearing. Entries for Vision 2020 close on 10 January 2020.)
Velcro Hanging Strip Instructions
Each textile work in Wonder of Eyes: Eyes of Wonder must have a velcro strip casing attached to the back in accordance with these instructions. Your textile work may be withdrawn from exhibition if it does not comply with these requirements.
Cut a square of fabric 6 1/2in x 6 1/2in. This will make a finished casing of 6x 3 in (width x height).
Fold the rectangle in half, across the width of the sleeve, right sides together.Machine stitch around the three sides of the raw edges with a 1/4in seam allowance, leaving a gap big enough to turn out the casing (eg 2in).
Turn the casing right side out. Press flat. Machine stitch around the perimeter through all layers.
Add the hook and loop velcro strips by machine stitching through all layers of the casing – adhesive backed velcro is not suitable for this application! (Some velcro can be very tenacious! For ease of opening and closing the velcro casing, use just enough of the loop velcro on the lower half to ensure that the casing closes firmly and securely rather than one long continuous strip.)
Hand stitch the top half of the casing to the centre top of the back of the quilt.
