My creative challenge for 2018 is Taking Shape: Cues from Nature where I make a 50x50cm abstract textile painting with a focus on shape. This month I went looking for inspiration in the rockpools at the northern end of the beach at Copacabana.
First I saw the birds, a heron and a cormorant.
Then I looked down and, for the first time ever!, spotted a collection of sea stars that appear to be consistent with belonging to the genus Patiriella, commonly known as carpet sea stars. The grey-green background of carpet sea star bodies provides excellent camouflage in rock pools and crevices of intertidal rocky shors.
I toyed with some sketches with rounded curved arms but decided these shapes would be too difficult to piece.
Instead, I further simplified the design to make convex curves. Here is my work in progress that I will complete on my return to Australia after teaching at the Pacific International Quilt Festival:
