My creative challenge for 2018 is Taking Shape: Cues from Nature and this month is all about pentagons. Consider the five-sided form of the common morning glory (convolvulaceae) flower:
In preparing this textile sketch, I spent a lot of time experimenting with layers, shape and transparency on my drawing apps. My challenge was to come up with a composition with 2 pentagons that filled the 50x50cm space in a pleasing way and retained a fairly evenly shaped pentagon to the extent of the overlap.
In parallel with sketching, I made my fabric selection. This time I chose colours more closely connected with the inspiration source:
This work in progress photo reassured me that I was on the right track:
While the composition focus is on the pentagon shape, I wanted to capture the star motif in the stitching:
