When I visited Pearl Beach last week, I got to see the Pearl Beach Village Tapestry. This textile artwork was designed by Pim Sarti, from a concept by Gloria Zucker, and stitched by Elva Furnell, Dorothy Hart, Joan Hart, Beverley Lapacek, Judy Lego, Wanda Riordan, Pim Sarti, Dorothy Symons and Gloria Zucker. It was created in the early 1990s and remains in good condition thanks to various protective measures implemented by a supportive community including a pull down screen that blocks out light and dust.
Across the country, there are many other community projects on permanent display. Here are just a handful that I know about in New South Wales (I welcome links for other projects):
As this case study shows, relationships between stakeholders in community projects can sometimes break down: Court Orders Return of Adaminaby Curtain. If you are planning a community project, take the time to document funding, copyright, physical ownership and ongoing care arrangements.
