Apart from the whole goosebumpingly incredible Twelve by Twelve experience, one of the highlights of the International Quilt Festival in Houston in November 2011 for me was the opportunity to see some of the works from the book Masters: Art Quilts Volume 2. Each morning before the crowds came in, I would take a quiet moment to study a handful of pieces closely – taking in the composition; the colours; the texture; the edge treatments and so on. Seeing this exhibition really cemented my desire to work on larger compositions for maximum visual impact.
If you couldn’t make it to Houston, you can still draw inspiration from this beautifully presented book. Lark Books have kindly provided an extra copy for me to give away. There are three FOUR ways to go into the draw:
- leave a comment on this post
this weekby Friday 3 February highlighting one aspect of artmaking or quiltmaking that you are concentrating on for 2012; and/or - “like” the Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting Facebook page;
- “like” the Beneath the Southern Sky Facebook page; and/or
- sign up for the Serendipity Studio Newsletter.
If you do all threefour, your name will go into the draw three four times. Existing Facebook followers and newsletter subscribers automatically go into the draw.

Colour is my 2012 focus.
Have been following Joen Wolfrom’s blog – and at last I am starting to understand how colours relate and how to create them. I have had one of her books for nearly 10 years, but never really understood it before.
Have worked on gut instincts so far – and yes it has worked. But I want to be faster .

This year I want to explore art quilts a lot more looking at machine work and using paint, beads, threads and other embellishments. I also want to delve more into applique.
The give away looks really yummy would love to have a browse thru but seeing the quilts in the flesh how great is that. Chris

I am downsizing this year to small arty quilts and am having wonderful fun ‘researching’ this topic. We have some fabulous artists to learn from, great techniques to try and such fresh, bright colours in our fabrics. Such an exciting time in quiltmaking. Thanks Brenda for a chance to win a great book.

I am discovering that I really like modern and art quilts. I feel more of my personality shows up in the finished quilt when I get away from the restrictions of someone else’s patterns. Goal for 2012? Be brave with color! Old dogs can learn new tricks!
