Today was the opening day of the Sydney Quilt Show. Even if you can’t make it in person, you can view the prize winner’s gallery on the Guild website.
As a sponsor of a prize in one of the junior quiltmaker categories, I was delighted to see 20 junior entries this year. I extend special congratulations to Harry Betts for his Crossroads quilt. Striking composition, precision piecing, even quilting (on her Mum’s longarm machine), great binding and a flat hanging quilt and lots of enthusiasm. A model entrant!
I didn’t make the winner’s list but I welcome the opportunity to show three of my quilts:
Pohutukawa Taonga: Gracing the New Zealand coast, pohutukawa flowers and their spectacular blossom are a national taonga (treasure). The stamped Maori words, reminiscent of wool bale stencils, denote other treasures of my kiwi upbringing: love, family, food, respect, belonging and well-being. (Monoprints, shibori, stamping, beading and hand stitching.)
Shining Through, a companion piece to my Twelve by Twelve Illumination quilt is also part of the member’s exhibition:
Finally, Desire Lines #7: Lust in the Log Cabin is a finalist in the AP&Q AQC Challenge – Seven Deadly Sins:
.
I’ll be sharing quilt show highlights with a focus on art quilts (other people’s work, not mine!) in a 30 minute floor talk tomorrow, Thursday at 11am and again on Sunday at 2pm. I hope you can join me.
