This week in blogland (thanks Kathy at Material Obsession and Rooruu), I have come across two interesting branding initiatives.
First up, here is the official emblem for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 (Welsh version at right):
The jaunty design is by 10 year old Katherine Dewar, from Chester and was selected following a national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. It’s a far cry from the staid emblems used for the Golden Jubilee. It conveys an energy and exuberance although I don’t see the Queen donning red, white and blue running gear any time soon. (I did like her primrose wedding outfit and have always been partial to her green suit.)
In other news, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee revealed the concept of an integrated visual “Look of the Games” for the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014:
“At the heart of the Look of the Games concept design lies the principle of the “patchwork quilt” – a combination of 16 designs representing the most famous traditional Russian arts and crafts, ranging from Gzhel to Khokhloma. The Look of the Games concept is the visual embodiment of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games philosophy and is intended to express the character of modern Russia whilst at the same time introducing guests from all over the world to traditional Russian hospitality.”
More information about the genesis of the designs can be found in “Look of the Games” announcement.
I look forward to seeing how both of these branding initiatives play out.
