Bidding is now open for the second section of the SAQA Benefit Auction 2020 which includes my contribution In a Whisper of Time. Can you spot it in the line up below?
I selected A Whisper in Time, a thread painting from my back catalogue, as a gentle antidote to 2020 and hope that it catches the eye of a collector.
How quickly the world can change. Fragments of life floating on the breeze.
The annual benefit auction is the signature fundraising event for Studio Art Quilt Associates*. Your purchases help increase the recognition for art quilts and the artists who make them while supporting SAQA’s exhibitions, publications, and education outreach. Here are some SAQA initiatives that have enriched my creative practice.
Exploring Art Quilts: New Directions
My profile and some of my recent artworks are featured in the new SAQA publication Exploring Art Quilts: New Directions. The book is beautifully presented and runs to 176 pages. It would make a great gift. (When I last looked, it was on sale at the Book Depository which makes shipping a heavy book more economical for us in the southern hemisphere.)
Season After Season
My artwork Seachange: Whale Tracks is currently touring with the SAQA global exhibition Season After Season. (I wrote about how I created this piece at Whale Tracks: Follow my Process.) While the exhibition tour has been disrupted by the pandemic, I am heartened that SAQA is advocating for this and other exhibits by actively promoting the art quilt to the museum and gallery sector.

Room with a View Virtual Gallery
SAQA also provided me with an opportunity to present my artwork with 29 other SAQA members at Aqua Art Miami ,one of the most high-profile art events in the world. That event has been cancelled. However, you can view a selection of the SAQA artwork in the online gallery Room with A View that includes a statement from curator Sandra Sider that highlights the flow of the exhibition.
*Studio Art Quilt Associates offers many exhibition, network and mentoring opportunities for its members. If you’ve been thinking about joining SAQA, add the discount code “WKS” to the application form (and add my name Brenda Gael Smith in the referral field) and you will receive a 10% discount on the membership fee.
