Dr. Elizabeth Townsend Gard is a professor of copyright law at Tulane University in New Orleans. She has been instrumental in building the Just Wanna Quilt community, podcast, research project and publishing arm. There’s also a Just Wanna Quilt Facebook Group. Elizabeth’s curiosity and enthusiasm are infectious. I am excited that she invited me to talk about my creative and curatorial practice, some upcoming exhibition opportunities and a touch of copyright. Here’s a link to our podcast chat:
Listen to “Brenda Gael Smith talks to us about entering quilt contests” on Spreaker. While some of the copyright commentary and analysis do not have application outside of the United States, I applaud Elizabeth for diving deep into this fascinating area and promoting the education of quilters, small businesses and the broader industry. Elizabeth has just been named a Newcomb Institute Greenbaum Fellow to continue her research on copyright and quilting, expanding to the narratives we create in fiber. I look forward to seeing where this takes her in 2020.
