Connections, a SAQA* Oceania regional exhibition opens at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, Greenway, Canberra this Friday 3 May and continues until Saturday 1 June 2019. The official opening is at 6pm by SAQA President Lisa Walton and exhibition juror Meredith Hinchcliffe. Here’s your invitation. All welcome!
The call for entry required artists to focus on the theme of “connections” but also provided an opportunity to link to the Tuggeranong Arts Centre 2019 theme “CONTRA”. Big Data: Contraflow is my response:
Statement: In an age where the smartphone is ubiquitous and the internet of things permeates our lives, we are irrevocably interconnected. Information is at our fingertips; Siri and Alexa are at our beck and call. Just as digital data streams in via binary code, a string of zeros and ones, huge volumes of data flow in the other direction. Reflecting this tension, this work incorporates the complementary palette of orange and blue and positive and negative stitching.
32 works have been selected for exhibition and all are 100x60cm. I am sure there will be many interesting interpretations of the theme and look forward to catching the exhibition at the Auckland Quilt Symposium (1-6 October) as I can’t make it to Canberra. Apparently other NZ venues have been secured and I let you know when I have more details.
*Studio Art Quilt Associates offers many exhibition, network and mentoring opportunities for its members. If you’ve been thinking about joining SAQA, add the discount code “WKS ” to the application form (and add my name Brenda Gael Smith in the referral field) and you will receive a 10% discount on the membership fee.
