My creative challenge for 2018 is Taking Shape: Cues from Nature where I make a 50x50cm abstract textile painting with a focus on shape. I have endeavoured to strip out line from my designs for this exercise, but in the face of the out-stretched form of the umbrella tree flowers, resistance was futile! I decided to invert the colour scheme, transform the berry flowers into square shapes and let the umbrella shapes in the negative space shine through.

At this point, the colours pop but the work is flat. Texture comes through the transformative power of stitch:

They were completed at the same time and this order flows in a more pleasing manner, at least to my eye. There are just two more pieces to go and I will have a full set of 12 monthly art project works.
