It’s August and I am seven months into my creative challenge for 2018 Taking Shape: Cues from Nature. This time my inspiration is the ornamental blooms of the lantana thickets that are invasive weeds in this part of the world:
While lantana flowers are not technically hexagon-shaped, a variation of the traditional grandmother’s garden layout reflects their explosive form. Here’s my preliminary digital sketch:
One thing that I have learned is that it is an easy matter to place shapes on a flat plane. It is an entirely different matter to sew irregularly shaped pieces together with elegant seams. Piecing this design on the fly would be a recipe for frustration. Instead I opted for a plan using freezer paper templates:
Inevitably, there were still some Y seams to work with:
Intensive, straight-line stitching echoes the hexagons shapes:
