Yesterday, I resolved to complete my donation artwork for the 2018 SAQA Spotlight Auction that is a fundraising initiative at the upcoming SAQA conference in San Antonio, Texas (5-8 April 2018).
Donation works are required to be 6x8in but are matted so that only 4.5×6.5in shows through the window. I am not familiar with working this size but there is a handy template on the SAQA website to help you compose your work to fit.
Tip: When you print out your template, make sure that it is printed accurately to size. My copy got distorted (probably because I was printing at A4 size not US letter size) and was on the small size which I only discovered when I was trimming up my work.
I found a black feather (magpie?) while out walking and gathered my fabrics. Black and chartreuse make a striking combination. Then I did a quick digital sketch:
The first feather I made was actually too big but this one turned out OK. My black fabric is not evenly dyed and I like it that way!Stitching adds texture and interest. Now to get it into the mail.
By the way, I have a new workshop Abstraction from Reality where students learn the basics of abstraction through observation, reflection, colour, line, shape and repetition using their own inspiration source.
Studio Art Quilt Associates offers many exhibition, network and mentoring opportunities for its members. If you’ve been thinking about joining SAQA, add the discount code “WKS ” to the application form (and add my name Brenda Gael Smith in the referral field) and you will receive a 10% discount on the membership fee.
