A strong Kiwiana theme emerged in my recent birthday gifts. Here’s a pohutukawa grouping:
- a felt needlecase kit from The Embroiderer;
- a sconce-like wall design comprised of six pieces that challenged my spatial perception skills as I put it together; and
- a beautiful titanium pohutukawa leaf pendant that fits reassuringly in my hand and is already a personal talisman.
As a gift to myself, I bought this wall plaque from Morris & James pottery. It’s currently on the wall above my desk and brings a smile to me each day:

Pohutukawa Taonga: Gracing the New Zealand coast, pohutukawa flowers and their spectacular blossom are a national taonga (treasure). The stamped Maori words, reminiscent of wool bale stencils, denote other treasures of my kiwi upbringing: love, family, food, respect, belonging and well-being.
