After Boston, we headed south to Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. Both cities are flat, situated on rivers and have colourful histories. We walked extensively but I didn’t take many photos to share.
Charleston is sometimes called the “Holy City” due to the concentration of churches in the historic district. Here are a couple that caught my eye.
In addition to a surprising number of Art Deco buildings, we saw many character homes in the local vernacular. The Charleston single house is long and narrow (one room wide) with a piazza (porch) extending down the side. This design allows for cross ventilation. It was hot (30 C) and somewhat humid and we were grateful for a breeze from the river.
In the absence of a suitable public transport option, we rented a car to drive across the low country marshlands from Charleston to Savannah (175km). We detoured via Beaufort which is famous for it antebellum architecture but it was cold, wet and windy and we didn’t linger. The rain continued in Savannah adding atmosphere to the many City Squares and parks.
