When I first started quilting, I made LOTS of baby and cot quilts. It was a wonderful way to try out a variety of techniques and styles and build new skills. It also gives me great pleasure to make meaningful, practical gifts with a handmade touch. My baby quilt production tapered off in line with the rate that my friends produced babies. Then a friend in America surprised me with the exciting news that, with assistance from modern science, she is expecting her first child despite being in her late 40s. I will be in her neighbourhood next week so I decided to rustle up a baby quilt.
Because I am stretched for time, I chose a simple and free Charm Square baby quilt pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. The stores have so many fabric ranges that appeal but I stuck to my resolution to only use fabrics from my stash.
I opted to make the quilt slightly bigger than the pattern – six rows instead of five and an extra 1 1/2 charm squares in each row. Here’s how it looks after quilting and washing. Wonderfully crinkly and cuddly.
Just in time for a very special baby.
Along the way, I discovered lots of flannel fabrics in my stash and I am inspired to also make a Mitred Corner Receiving Blanket as shared by Pink Chalk Fabrics. Do you have a favourite quick baby quilt pattern?
