Those who are familiar with the organic lines and shapes of my textile art portfolio are sometimes surprised to learn that I also love to make more traditionally-inspired, geometric pieced quilts. I do not see this as a dichotomy. Rather, my textile and teaching practice is all about revelling in colour and mastering skills to create work that reflects creative intention – with a dash of serendipity!
Thus, the launching pad for my Squared Fun – Fun Squared workshop is learning how to accurately calculate and machine piece the “Double Square” or “Economy Patch” block to make your preferred block size. It’s easy when you know how! We then consider a range of setting options for this very versatile block.
This classic block is a great way to showcase fabrics, especially large scale and directional prints. My own quilts have incorporated rich reproduction fabrics; bright novelty prints; and the unmistakeable allure of blowsy Kaffe Fasset florals. Student quilts from the Serendipity Student Gallery feature taupes, spots, florals and more.
Workshop Spotlight is series of posts highlighting workshops from my portfolio of project-based and technique-driven patchwork and quilting classes. My focus is on striking designs and the effective use of colour so as to promote fun and encourage the creative confidence of my students. I am available to teach at shops or private venues on the Central Coast, in the greater Sydney metropolitan area and beyond. I love to travel!
