The New Quilt 2010 is an exhibition of contemporary Australian quilt textiles presented by The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc in partnership with Manly Art Gallery & Museum. The exhibition will be launched officially on Friday 18 June at 6pm by its curator, leading textile artist and art academic Dr Dianne Firth, Associate Professor & Head of Landscape Architecture in the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Canberra. See Public Programs for further details about accompanying events and programming associated with this exhibition.
The New Quilt is a juried exhibition. From the 60 works submitted for consideration, 26 were selected for exhibition including two quilts of mine:
Inspired by a freshly mown lawn, glistening in the morning dew, Turf is a continuation of my series exploring the organic splendour and variety of grasses. (See: Grass, Afterglow and Savannah.)

Desire Lines# 5: After the Rain in some ways marks a convergence of my grass series with my Desire Lines series. With the rain comes new life, reaching for the sky:

A colour catalogue, sponsored by Brother International Australia, is available from the Gallery or the Guild office for $4.00 or you are welcome to download any of the following documents.

I didn’t mean to drop off the blogosphere but the past few days have been very intense as we gear up for the opening of the Sydney Quilt Show tomorrow, Wednesday 20 June at 9am. In addition to my usual roles on the quilt show subcommittee as layout designer for the show and as Guild webmaster, I am also currently the publicity and sponsorship officer for the Guild and helping out with certain logistical and administrative matters as our longstanding co-ordinator is absent due to a family illness. Anyway, I am pleased to say that judging day on Sunday went very smoothly. There was a great atmosphere of cooperation and resourcefulness and some very exciting results. My lips are sealed but check out the Guild blog for a news flash around 10.15am tomorrow.
I can safely say that none of my quilts were awarded any prizes but I am thrilled to be able to share FOUR of my quilts:
Timelines#1: Remember the Date! is part of the AP&Q AQC Challenge travelling exhibition:
Feather Folly is my entry in the 2009 challenge

Desire Lines #3 Running Hot & Cold is part of the main members’ exhibition along with Rose Moderne:

And, as if that isn’t enough excitement, Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting is sponsor for second place in the Junior Member A (up to 12 years) category and I get to present the prize to the junior quiltmaker.

It’s only a week until the Sydney Quilt Show officially opens at 9.30am on Wednesday, 16 June. While my own quilts are completed (I learned my lesson last year!), I am still immersed in aspects of quilt show administration.
I’m looking forward to seeing the fruits of the creativity of the members of the Quilters’ Guild of NSW. There is also an extensive program of activities. Don’t miss out!

Yesterday afternoon a photographer from the local newspaper came to photograph me at work in my studio for an article to promote the upcoming Sydney Quilt Show. It was pouring with rain so beach shot were a washout. Fortunately there was plenty of colour on the design wall and loose blocks that I could play with:

During June, my contemporary quilts will be on exhibition at the following venues:
It is such a pleasure to be able to share the colour and dimension of textile works in a real life exhibition setting. Guilds work very hard to provide exhibition opportunities for their members. I encourage you to consider joining The Quilters’ Guild of NSW. Their membership year starts on 1 July. Join now to be eligible to enter the Sydney Quilt Show 2011.
If your interest extends to contemporary quilts, check out Australia’s organisation for art quilters Ozquilt Network Inc. Their regular newsletters and special membership area of their website highlight exhibition opportunities both in Australia and internationally including Australia Wide Two. Entry is open to all current Ozquilt Network members and the closing date is 30 July 2010. If I get through June, I may just enter something myself!

I will be giving a slideshow presentation about the Twelve by Twelve Collaborative Art Quilt Project to the Quilters Guild of NSW Inc this Saturday 22 May at Burwood RSL. I will also share a selection of small quilts. The Guild meeting starts at 2pm but you can come along at 11am for a dyeing demonstration (by Gai Rayner) and have lunch at the club. Visitors welcome! Indeed, you are invited to bring along your own 12×12in quilt to share in a mini-exhibition for the meeting. The more the merrier!

With my entries for the Sydney Quilt Show and the New Quilt 2010 completed, I am turning my attention to making some more teaching samples for my forthcoming workshops. I already have a significant collection of teaching quilts but many of them are very BIG and this is not so great when you are travelling by air. So my goal is to make some smaller samples AND use up some of my stash.
In particular, I have piles of flat solids (Kona Cottons) left over from my workshop with Nancy Crow back in 2006. Guess what colours do not normally make it into my creative palette:
