A week or two ago, I received an inquiry from an executive* looking for some contemporary textiles to brighten up the company’s new office premises. She expressed particular interest in Turf and Desire Lines #5: After the Rain but wasn’t sure if they would be big enough for the particular space. We quickly agreed that the best approach would be for me to bring along a selection of works in various styles, colours and sizes. Here are some photos from today’s audition. As you can see, some pieces work better than others:

The office is located in a heritage-listed wool store overlooking the docks. The unusual shaped windows let in a fair amount of natural light and the roughly plastered brick walls complement textiles very well. The client and I are reviewing some different options now and I look forward to showing you the outcome later on. In the meantime, it is very exciting to know that my contemporary quilts will be on permanent display.

PS: Brought to you by the wonder of gaffer tape!

Color Improvisations is an invitational exhibition of contemporary quilts curated by Nancy Crow and currently showing at the Haus de Wirstcraft in Stuttgart, Germany. She invited 26 quiltmakers from North America and Europe to improvise on the topic of color. At the end of a two-year process, she selected 50 works, all at least 72in (1.8metre) square.
You can view a selection of images from the exhibition at:
I’ve ordered a copy of the catalogue from Lisa Call. She only ships to the US so I’ll have something to look forward to when I am next in San Francisco (likely to be late 2011 - sigh!).

Yesterday I took a break from my 40×40cm composition for Australia Wide Two (that is just NOT working!) and drove down to Sydney for the last day of The New Quilt exhibition at Manly Art Gallery & Museum. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the gathering (thank you to Janet, Gill, Denise, Sandra and others who attended) and really enjoyed the presentations by fellow exhibitors: Judi Nikoleski, Gloria Muddle and Margery Goodall. Both Judi and Gloria are relative newcomers to the textile medium and bring an approach not constrained by notions of quilt policery - Judi has a background in graphic design and website development and Gloria is an accomplished painter. Interestingly, Margery is also a water colour artist and this colour blending is reflected in her work.
I’m going to go ponder what’s happening on the design wall now.

How exciting it was to see my quilts hanging at the opening of The New Quilt 2010: Contemporary Quilt Textiles exhibition last night:

I didn’t arrange any photos of me with my quilts - I was feeling a little ragged after a week of quilt show happenings - but here are some detail shots that show the quilting:
The exhibition continues until 25 July 2010, open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. There is a curatorial floor talk tomorrow at 3pm and artist floor talks at 3pm on Sunday 18 July and 25 July. (I’ll be giving my floor talk on 25 July.)

The New Quilt 2010 is an exhibition of contemporary Australian quilt textiles presented by The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc in partnership with Manly Art Gallery & Museum. The exhibition will be launched officially on Friday 18 June at 6pm by its curator, leading textile artist and art academic Dr Dianne Firth, Associate Professor & Head of Landscape Architecture in the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Canberra. See Public Programs for further details about accompanying events and programming associated with this exhibition.
The New Quilt is a juried exhibition. From the 60 works submitted for consideration, 26 were selected for exhibition including two quilts of mine:
Inspired by a freshly mown lawn, glistening in the morning dew, Turf is a continuation of my series exploring the organic splendour and variety of grasses. (See: Grass, Afterglow and Savannah.)

Desire Lines# 5: After the Rain in some ways marks a convergence of my grass series with my Desire Lines series. With the rain comes new life, reaching for the sky:

A colour catalogue, sponsored by Brother International Australia, is available from the Gallery or the Guild office for $4.00 or you are welcome to download any of the following documents.

I didn’t mean to drop off the blogosphere but the past few days have been very intense as we gear up for the opening of the Sydney Quilt Show tomorrow, Wednesday 20 June at 9am. In addition to my usual roles on the quilt show subcommittee as layout designer for the show and as Guild webmaster, I am also currently the publicity and sponsorship officer for the Guild and helping out with certain logistical and administrative matters as our longstanding co-ordinator is absent due to a family illness. Anyway, I am pleased to say that judging day on Sunday went very smoothly. There was a great atmosphere of cooperation and resourcefulness and some very exciting results. My lips are sealed but check out the Guild blog for a news flash around 10.15am tomorrow.
I can safely say that none of my quilts were awarded any prizes but I am thrilled to be able to share FOUR of my quilts:
Timelines#1: Remember the Date! is part of the AP&Q AQC Challenge travelling exhibition:
Feather Folly is my entry in the 2009 challenge

Desire Lines #3 Running Hot & Cold is part of the main members’ exhibition along with Rose Moderne:

And, as if that isn’t enough excitement, Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting is sponsor for second place in the Junior Member A (up to 12 years) category and I get to present the prize to the junior quiltmaker.

During June, my contemporary quilts will be on exhibition at the following venues:
It is such a pleasure to be able to share the colour and dimension of textile works in a real life exhibition setting. Guilds work very hard to provide exhibition opportunities for their members. I encourage you to consider joining The Quilters’ Guild of NSW. Their membership year starts on 1 July. Join now to be eligible to enter the Sydney Quilt Show 2011.
If your interest extends to contemporary quilts, check out Australia’s organisation for art quilters Ozquilt Network Inc. Their regular newsletters and special membership area of their website highlight exhibition opportunities both in Australia and internationally including Australia Wide Two. Entry is open to all current Ozquilt Network members and the closing date is 30 July 2010. If I get through June, I may just enter something myself!

Back in March, I mentioned that the Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery had put out a call for entries for small textile artworks to be included in their forthcoming exhibition PETITE. Apparently due to the large number of entries, and the size of the exhibiton space, a maximum of one work per artist was selected. My work Organic Chocolate (Milk) was chosen along with pieces by Linda Robertus, fellow Twelve Helen Conway and others. The PETITE exhibition runs from 12 June - 11 July at 56 Ovens Street, Wangaratta. Gallery hours are:
Monday and Tuesday: 12.00pm to 5.00pm
Wednesday to Friday: 10.00am to 5.00pm
Saturday and Sunday: 1.00pm to 4.00pm
