For Week 19 of my weekly art project, I celebrate the coastal phenomenon of the cool change – aka the Southerly Buster. Recently we have experienced temperatures consistently in the 30s with little overnight relief and wimpy ocean breezes. The kind of conditions where the beach holds little appeal and instead you lie starfish-like in bed in front of a fan.
Yesterday all of Sydney was hanging out for the cool change, a front of cool air coming from the south bringing welcome respite. On the radio, callers were reporting it as it travelled up the coast. The sky darkens, You can feel the air becoming charged. Abruptly the bay ripples with the wind and you race around the house closing windows and securing doors. The temperature drops almost instantly.
