My artwork Canberra: Meeting Place features as a project in issue 128 of Embellish magazine celebrating the inspiration of the Australian Outback. Learn how to make your own version using karamatsu (stitched resist) shibori techniques. The magazine goes on sale this week and is available in both print and digital format from Artwear Publications.
Canberra: Meeting Place was first exhibited in Art Quilt Australia 2013: People, Place & Nation presented by Ozquilt Network. Art Quilt Australia 2017 will take place at the prestigious Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Launceston, Tasmania in October-November 2017 and will include the Expressions Wool Quilt Award and an OZQN Award of Excellence. By the way, the OZQN membership year starts on 1 January – join Ozquilt Network now to keep up to date with this exciting exhibition opportunity.
Canberra: Meeting Place: According to some sources, the word Canberra is derived from the word Kambera or Canberry and means “meeting place” in the Ngunnawal language of the local Ngabri people. Loosely based on a map of the Canberra region, this work incorporates karamatsu stitched resist shibori to create a circle motif that is often used to symbolise a meeting place or campsite in indigenous art.
