The current project on my design wall is intended as a potential entry for the SAQA exhibition Concrete & Grasslands that opens for registration from 1-30 September 2015.* (If I can get it done in time, I might also submit it for the Gosford Art Prize that closes on 14 September.) The Concrete & Grasslands prospectus provides: Artists are invited to submit work that focuses either on a cityscape or landscape, rural or urban, or a combination in one piece.
My personal guideline is to eschew themed exhibitions unless they fit within the body of work that I seek to create. In this case, it’s a good fit. I have an ongoing series considering the organic splendour, texture and variety of Grass and another series studying Wildflowers. For this work, I would like to experiment with a contrast of scale and hues depicting a country/city divide.
This quick iPad sketch gives an indication of the proportions, bearing in mind that this work may need to be posted and also the size restrictions in the prospectus. I am aiming for 70x150cm (HxW). Ish.
I have lots of greens in my stash but may need more grays.Watch the grass grow, row by row.
The softer hues at the top are deliberate. However, that light green-gray band may yet be replaced.
Whether the city elements will be incorporated remains to be seen. Watch this space!
