Inspiration may have come too late for the AQC True Blue challenge (see Staying True), but I managed to submit an entry for the Lest We Forget Quilt Challenge. My work will appear in a mosaic of more than 100 quilts that will premier at the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne from 16-19 April 2015.
Honour the Fallen: The names of those who lost their lives are imprinted in faded memorials and honour rolls found throughout New Zealand and Australia. This work, made from khaki woollen felt and white bandage cloth, shows names drawn from the casualty list for 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery in Gallipoli.
Dedicated to those laid to rest in the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery in Gallipoli.
I transferred the text using the Image Transfers with Orange Power technique. The uneven text coverage was deliberate.
The organisers requested velcro tabs in each corner so the work can be affixed to carpet wall exhibition surfaces. Exposed velcro is liable to catch on and damage other works so I made my velcro tabs with protective covers that won’t get lost or separated in the course of installation. (This is a mini version of the protective casing used on the hanging sleeves for the for the Living Colour! exhibition with these instructions.)
I look forward to seeing more work from this exhibition after it opens at the Australasian Quilt Convention. In the meantime, a handful of works can be viewed online at Lest We Forget Quilt.

Thank you, Brenda for sharing the info and link about the forthcoming exhibition of the Lest We Forget quilts. Your quilt is so interesting with the use of text and the cross.
My husband has researched a Great Uncle that died in WW1 and we have made many trips to the Victorian countryside to see where he lived and worked as a young man before he went to war. Also to visit the Avenue of Honour where a tree has been dedicated to the Uncle. Then when we went to Paris for a few days, we put aside a day to go on a personalized tour of the Somme battlefields and to visit the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial to pay our respects to an unknown Great-Uncle.
I am sure there will be great interest in this exhibition. Thank you for the inspiration, as my husband now wants me to make a quilt in remembrance of his Great-Uncle.
Lest We Forget.

Hi Jenny
Thanks for stopping by my blog and taking the time to leave a comment. I’m sure the Lest We Forget exhibition at AQC will be very moving and complemented by a great series of quilts by Lucy Carroll. This is not the first time I have considered this subject matter. For the identity theme for the Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt Challenge, I made a piece called Lost & Found at Fromelles .
