Running the Numbers

I remember very little from the movie sex lies & videotape but I do recall a segment that went something like this:
Garbage. All I’ve been thinking about all week
is garbage. I can’t stop thinking about it.What kind of thoughts about garbage?
I just… I’ve gotten real concerned over
what’s gonna happen with all the garbage.
I mean, we’ve got so much of it.You know? I mean, we have to run out
of places to put this stuff eventually.
Indeed. Photographer, Chris Jordan is someone else that has been “Running the Numbers” and he has created some thought provoking art work. Plastic Caps, for example, depicts one million plastic cups, the number used on airline flights in the US every six hours. While Plastic Bottles depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used in the US every five minutes. Meanwhile NSW town Bundanoon has banned bottled water sales. Being a one-time regulatory lawyer, I’m not convinced about the banning mechanism but applaud initiatives to encourage less packaging. You know? I mean, we have to run out of places to put this stuff eventually…

Hi! Brenda,
Thanks for this thought provoking blog entry. Being aware of garbage generated and packaging is important in my situation, I live 20ks inland from our main small city Burnie, Tasmania (20.000) we live on 4acres; we have no rubbish collection, no recycling, even our daily nespaper, the magazines we read become a problem, glass bottles and jars a nightmare. However I am glad I came here to live as I have become more aware of waste and recyling and I am a great believer that the problem large or small of garbage begins with me; and if more of us remember we are part of the garbage problem perhaps we would start to make a small inroad in that.
