Line Marking & the Dark-Light Principle of Design
March 4, 2008 2:20PM | Filed Under Inspiration, Technique:Design |Notan (a Japanese word meaning dark-light) focuses on the interaction between positive and negative space and is the subject of an excellent textbook of design exercises by Dorr Bothwell and Marlys Mayfield:

I am enamoured with lines and stripes. My local council has today provided me with a graphic example of the elegance of black and white compositions. Who would have thought that a pedestrian crossing could be so beautiful?!

I have never seen markings like those at the side of the crossing? Is it purely a local thing? australian?
I also have the book, but havent got around to looking at it properly yet….

Having done a little more research, I see this configuration of line markings is for road humps that are combined with pedestrian crossings. Elsewhere in Copacabana we have a speed hump and that only has the E-strip marking down either side.
